Myles Mayfield, 2, of Greenwood , SC has died from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a complication of E. coli infections that causes kidney failure. He died May 31 at Greenville Memorial Hospital, coroner Sonny Cox told  WYFF News. HUS primarily affects young children occurring in about 10 percent who have E. coli infections. In addition to kidney failure, it can cause seizure, stroke and coma. Health officials have not identified the source of the infection. E. coli is transferred when microscopic amounts of human or animal feces are ingested.  This can happen through poor hygiene of food handlers, consuming unpasteurized dairy products or contact with live animals at petting zoos or other exhibits. 1,640 pounds of ground elk meat that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria

Frontiere Natural Meats of Denver is recalling 1,640 pounds of ground  elk meat  that may be contaminated with E. coli   O157:H7 bacteria. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as they risk serious illness if they do. Symptoms of an E. coli infection include abdominal cramps and diarrhea that is sometimes bloody. Some people can develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which can be fatal. Those most at risk for HUS are young children and adults over 65. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death. The recalled ground elk was distributed to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia retail stores. It was packed in one pound packages labeled “DK Natural Meats All Natural Ground Elk” with a “Use or Freeze By” of  4-27-15. No illnesses were reported at the time of the recall.

Taylor Farms listeria contaminated spinach RECALLED served at 10 Lancaster County Schools in South Carolina

Spinach that was served at 10 Lancaster County Schools in Lancaster, SC , has been recalled, according to a  news report  from WCSC-TV in Charleston, SC. The spinach was from Taylor Farms in Salinas, CA , which was  recalled  because of potential contamination with  Listeria . The 10 schools included in the recall are A.R. Rucker Middle, Brooklyn Springs Elementary, Buford Elementary, Buford High, Erwin Elementary, Harrisburg Elementary, Heath Springs Elementary, Indian Land Elementary, Indian Land Middle and McDonald Green Elementary. Lancaster County School District officials said they received a notice this week from one of its product providers about the spinach recall. The district has sent out letters to parents of students who attend the schools affected by the spinach recall. “So far, no one in our schools or any of the other customers who received and used the spinach has reported any illness,” Superintendent Gene Moore said. “Despite that, we wa...
